Throughout the centuries, the Catholic Church has been a patron of the arts – from the performing arts, such as music and theatre, to the visual and literary arts. In more recent times, however, the presence of the Church in the arts has been less obvious, with the notable exception of work by individual Christian artistes. Often, the Church is expected to have a reactive rather than proactive presence when a piece of art, be it a film, a book or a performance, is seen to contravene the sensibilities of the Christian faith. However, the Church, as the voice of Christ in the world, must be seen for what it is – a force for love and for the good of our society. Therefore, the Archdiocese wants to celebrate humanity by contributing positively to the arts, exploring the human condition in all its complexity whilst maintaining and communicating the Christian belief in its redemption through Christ.
