Commentators of the period acclaimed Thompson and his poem: a great poet of the first order? and a most wonderful lyric in our own language?. This song cycle, premiered in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 2011, contains all the drama and emotions of the poem in its day. Thompson’s The Hound of Heaven is an epic and poignant poem. It describes his life, and how God, despite Thompson’s waywardness, remained faithful to him and forgave him for all of his faults and failings. Thompson felt “chased” by God, not only to take the righteous path but to understand that God will pursue forgiveness no matter how far we stray.
