AGAP recognises that film was one of the most important and culturally influential artforms of the 20th Century and celebrates the potential of this great medium. In the past, AGAP has organised interactive “film and faith” cinema events for people of various ages and interests.
In March 2007, we held a special screening of Mel Gibson’s controversial film, The Passion of the Christ, at the University of Glasgow Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies. We invited senior school pupils, students and the public to watch the film and engage in an interactive discussion with a panel which included film academics, educators and scripture scholars.
In 2008, school pupils from across Glasgow attended a screening of a film about the early life of Karol Wojtyla, the Polish actor, poet, priest who became Pope John Paul II. The interactive event invited the audience to consider the relationship between faith and culture and the effects of totalitarian oppression upon cultural identity.
As part of LENTfest 2008, we screened the award-winning Glasgow gangster film, Man Dancin’, and invited the public to watch the film and participate in a discussion with director Norman Stone and writer Sergio Casci about the film as a work of faith and as a work of art.
